I spent past 2 months almost just fishing with Bait Junkie to see how I could have got the best out of it and make the soft bait work for my fishing. Initial impression was “Hum… this soft bait is a bit different!” I could not get entice the fish to bite in normal manors. However once I figured the formula out, and got the depth ranges adjusted, it was like a floodgate opened up. Hook up rates went up in a big jump, with the benefits of being able to fish in completely new ways and in traditionally difficult spots. I am sure I have only scratched the surface of its potentials, and more fun ways of fishing and targeting bigger fish as well. I’m going to have some fun for the remaining of the summers experimenting new ways of fishing with it.

We have been fishing around Whangarei and the Bait Junkies have been accounting for some real solid Snapper through spring. We have also been catching a lot of Kingfish, targeting them with a medium-fast retrieve and getting smashed mid-water. It has been becoming a bit of a pattern recently and epic fun on the light gear. Motor Oil and Banana Split have been the most consistent colours. My best Snapper was caught on a Baby Bass 7” Jerkshad. The fish measured 875mm but we had no scales to weigh it. I would hate to hazard a guess, but have held an 11.55kg fish and this felt significantly larger. Tiana also hooked an absolute horse of a Kingfish on the softbait gear and did an insane job to land it. The fish was in crazy condition and measured 125mm. Baitjunkies must come pre-loaded with moocher dust!

Have used the baits extensively around the far north and Coromandel, fishing from kayak in shallow water through to 25m. I have been loving the Bait Junkie Grubs, particularly the 4” Grubs. They are a very good product. Wish there was a 6” size as well. All colours have proven to be effective in the right situation, and I had multiple sessions where all baits were catching. Latest fish weighed in at 9.6kg. It wouldn’t release so was kept and fed a few people. And that wasn’t the biggest Snapper! Got one estimated at 12kgs, this time released quickly unfortunately without a photo.

I have found the 7” Jerkshads the go to snapper candy! They move amazingly naturally and the Elastomax compound lasts many serious mauling’s. The ultraviolet glow is a bonus for deeper 50m+ northland fishing. Lately I have been hooking up to many Kingfish on the retrieve and having a ball battling these beasts on very light softbait gear off the ski. It seems they can’t resist the action of these baits when moving fast. The smaller Grub and Minnow have been lethal in the wash, with very aggressive hits as soon as they hit the water. Overall the Elastomax material is a winner, outperforming any other of the popular softbaits that I have used.
